Creating Product Collections Using Product Tags

Product Collections are created through the use of Product Tags in BuyerQuest. This topic provides details on how Product Tags can be used to define Product Collections and provide buyers with streamlined access to them through search.


There are many reasons why you will want to create Product Collections to group individual products together, including: time-based ("Products available this Fall"), thematic ("Safety gear for the workplace"), and to help Users find specific items ("Recommended Laptops").  While there are different ways to create Product Collections in the BuyerQuest Platform, including Bundles and Standard Categories, this white paper will explore leveraging Product Tags to accomplish this.

Product Tags

A "Product Tag" is a relationship between a search term and one (or many) Products.  For example, if you create a Product Tag named "fall_products" and you associate Product A to this tag, then any time a User searches for the exact term "fall_products", Product A will be returned in the search results.  This capability enables you to create collections of Products by using unique Product Tag names (like "fall_products") and to associate only the Products that you want the Users to see.  You can then provide an exact link to your End Users to perform this search and then view these specific Products.

NOTE: Product Tags must always be a single term (i.e. "fall_products" is acceptable, but "fall products" is not).

Product Tag Management

Product Tags are managed in the Admin Control Panel under "Catalog > Manage Product Tags > All Tags".

The Product Tag grid allows for both the creation of new Tags and management of existing Tags. 

To create a new Tag, click the 'Add New Tag' button (shown in the screenshot below). 

To manage an existing Tag, simply search for that Tag in the grid and then click on the name of the tag itself to open the Product Tag detail page.

The Product Tag detail page includes two sections - the 'General Information' section shown below is where you can edit the Tag Name itself along with whether the Tag is activated (Approved = Activated, Pending/Disabled = Not Active).  The Base Popularity should not be used.

The other section of the Product Tag detail page is where you manage the Product to Tag relationship.  

To search for Products, simply uncheck the main checkbox on the left, update the dropdown to "Any" and then click the Search button.  This will return all available Products. You can also type in a SKU in the "SKU text box" to filter by those specific SKUs.  The screenshot below shows how it will appear during a search.

To select a Product to be associated with a given Tag, you can check the corresponding checkbox for that Product (or multiple Products) and then click either the 'Save Tag' or 'Save and Continue Edit' button. 

You can also remove a Product association by deselecting the checkbox next to the Product that you would like to remove.

The screenshot below shows what it looks like after a Product is associated with a Tag.

Managing Product Tags

Accessing the Product Collection on the Front-End

To provide availability to the Product Collection to your End Users, you simply need to provide them the corresponding search URL for that Product Tag.

Continuing with our example, this is the URL to provide to the Users: http://<root BuyerQuest URL for your site>/search/?q=fall_products

Typically, this URL will be made available via a CMS Block on the Home Page to the appropriate Users.
